  • What's That Pig Outdoors? A Memoir of Deafness (Hill & Wang, 1990) by Henry Kisor (A 30-year veteran newspaper reporter, Kisor tells the story of his life in this witty, wise memoir);
  • The Feel of Silence (Temple University Press, 1995) by Bonnie Poitras Tucker (A bit darker, this memoir is the autobiography of an inspiring deaf woman who overcame extraordinary obstacles to become a law professor at Arizona State University);
  • Reading Between The Lips (Bonus Books, 1995) by Lew Golan (A newspaper editor-turned advertising copywriter-turned computer guru-turned social and political activist, the upbeat Golan tells the story of being a profoundly deaf man in mainstream society);
  • Listening With My Heart (Doubleday, 1997) by Heather Whitestone (Talk about a role model … From a deaf childhood to Miss Alabama and finally, Miss America 1995);
  • Yes, You Can Heather: The Story of Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995 (Harper Collins, 1995) by Daphne Gray (Heather Whitestone's improbable journey, courtesy of her mom).
  • Voices of the Oral Deaf: Fourteen Role Models Speak Out (McFarland & Company, 2002) by Jim Reisler (14 extraordinary oral deaf adults offer their stories and advice to families of deaf people through in-depth interviews).
  • When Your Child is Deaf: A Guide For Parents (York Press, 1991) by David Luterman and Mark Ross.


  • Cecilia's Story — In this new documentary, follow the uplifting story of 8-year-old Cecilia and her family as they navigate the challenges of deafness. Thanks in part to her cochlear implant, Cecilia grows into an independent young girl. The 46-minute film is available, free of charge, by contacting Advanced Bionics

  • Dreams Spoken Here (60 minutes) is a detailed exploration of oral deaf education from infancy through adolescence and adulthood, focusing on the critical early years … includes information on educational techniques and dramatic technological advances in hearing aids and cochlear implants.
  • Dreams Spoken Here (short version, 20 minutes) is an abridged version of the above film that is usable for those wanting a brief introduction to the issues discussed in the full version of Dreams Spoken Here.
  • Speaking for Myself (10 minutes) describes how deaf children can learn to speak … intended for those unfamiliar with oral deaf education.
